Rust Belt Tour 2009
The Bahamas, this isn't.
This time, we find ourselves in the Motor City, home of the world's greatest rhythm & blues and defunct auto manufacturers. But wait, how did we get here? Well that's simple, via Canada of course!
Saturday started nice enough as we threaded our way across upstate New York, almost avoiding all of the "Oh My God The World Is Ending Thunderstorms." We arrived in Niagara Falls at lunch time, only to be greeted by the largest Indian population outside of Parsippany. A quick soaking trip on the Maid Of The Mist and we blew out of there over to the relative civilization of Niagara Falls, Canada... aka... "We Wish Our City Actually Was Las Vegas, eh."
Maureen had a few wonderful treats of Canadian weirdness. Lots of people with funny accents which she "just thinks is the neatest," a Tim Hortons sandwich and donut lunch, and a receptionist at the hotel who thought New Jersey was just the finest because, well, "Jun Bun Joooveee lives there, eh." We stopped to put our toes in a very (very, very) cold Lake Ontario before rocking at the speed of light across Southern Ontario (speed limit what?), all the while listening to the soothing sounds of Canadian Light Rock music on the radio.
Crossing back at the beautifully ugly Ambassador Bridge, we cruised downtown Detroit, marveling at the decrepit buildings, the decrepit auto companies, and the fat Midwestern tourists who were in town for the massive HOEDOWN (could you make this up?). A quick stop at Hitsville, USA, the original home of MoTown Records, and we are here in Detroit awaiting tomorrow when we continue on to Chitown.
